The Birth of a Nation? Not quite.

There’s nothing new under the sun.  Never has been, never will be.  Only different iterations of the same old shit, different degrees of this over that, different skews and accents towards one thing and away from the other.

Japhy’s declaration of the birth of the Christian Fundamentalist party is, I feel, at least 8 years late, perhaps 16 years.  Remember the ’92 GOP Convention?  Think Hitler at Nuremberg and Leni Riefenstahl.  It’s also about three buckets of “wish” short of being true. Yeah, I wish it were true.  Totally.  A Republican schism – a real, bona fide, un-healing split in the GOP – would be great for America.  Like it was in 1912, when Teddy Roosevelt “Bull Moosed” the progressives out of the GOP and eventually into the Democratic Party.  Ended up giving us the New Deal, social security, a victory over international fascism, massive public education, a 60-year housing boom, a geometrically expanding economy and civil rights.  In short, it ended up creating modern America.

But this ain’t a schism.  This is one flank of the party over-dominating the other flanks of the party.  The religious/social conservatives in ascendancy over the libertarian, small government wings, to be sure, but no schism.  Unless and until the downtrodden libertarians and moderates actually leave the party, it’s still the same old party.  Funny thing is, modern conventional wisdom would say that the libertarians and moderates won’t go over to the Dems until the Dems become more moderate themselves.  Anti- historical bullshit.  FDR brought them in with a wildly progressive, aggressive and expansive New Deal.  But, that’s a subject for a different history lesson, not today.

Alas, there is nothing new under the sun.  Not in this area, at least.  And not today.

    Ever heard of Godwin’s law?

In no way do I think there’ll be a schism in the GOP. What reason would there be for that? The business minded Republicans can stomach the fundies. Give them a Palin and talk about God so long as the tax breaks keep on coming. I don’t see this convention as being the triumph of the Christian Movement, but as I said “the nadir of the conservative” one.

Also, The Bull Moose Party was a failure for everyone involved, despite what Wikipedia seems to be saying.

The Bull Moose was a complete failure for everyone involved - everyone who was a Republican. It remade the Democratic party and remade America. And, as I said, I surely do wish it would happen again. And I don’t agree with your statement that this is the “death of the Republican party and the rise of this new thing - the Christian Fundamentalist party.” Wish it were. But, you know what they say about wishing…

As for Godwin’s law, never really been a law-abiding person, so really don’t worry too much about laws. Prefer to do my own thinking, and when I take one look at Leni’s films and one look at the ‘92 GOP Convention, two and two easily equals four. Pull up Pat Buchanan’s lovely, heart-warming speech from the ‘92 Convention. Christian America, Uber Alles.
