The current honeymoon and bump in the national polls being enjoyed by John McCain is about to come to a crashing halt as soon as he picks his Veep. McCain has been getting away with two things until now: One, driving the media and the campaign to be about Obama, and through that, raising doubts as to Obama’s “readiness” for leadership. Two, McCain has been gliding on the 30 years of good will he has built up with the media, getting away with the continued “maverick” b.s., all the while substantively (and below radar) wrapping himself up in every Right-wing shibboleth out there.
That comes to a screeching halt as soon as he names his Veep. Why? Because whoever he names will be a standard, lifelong, Right-winger. And that will finally get the media – and the campaign – to focus on just how far Right he has gone. It won’t be McCain the maverick after Denver. It will be McCain/Right-Wing Veep after Denver. And then, all his current positions – all his newfound love of the radical Right agenda – will be in full view and for all to see.
And the party will come to an end. It will then be up to Obama/Biden – or whoever – to hang that around McCain’s neck like the albatross that it is. No wonder McCain is delaying naming his choice until the last possible minute.
